Many who seek to buy a home for the first time don’t know what they need in terms of insurance on their future property, and the overload of information can make this process quite intimidating.

During my summer internship at Fremtind, we utilized their designsystem Jøkul to re-design a new website with focus on how we could help young adults better understand their own insurance needs.

Background For many people, insurance can feel abstract and confusing, making it difficult to know what is truly necessary. This is especially true for first-time homebuyers, who may find the wide variety of insurance options overwhelming and sometimes unnecessary. Reading about insurance packages can feel text-heavy and impersonal, while speaking with counselors can leave clients feeling as though their individual needs are secondary to being sold policies they’re unsure they even require.

Our goal was to make conversations with counselors feel more balanced, informed, and approachable; helping clients feel confident, supported, and able to make efficient, well-informed decisions.

How can we make interactions with counselors feel more balanced, informed, and approachable?

ProcessIn our process, we conducted interviews with Fremtind representatives and sketched early prototypes, which we then guerilla-tested on the streets of Oslo. Using the feedback we gathered, we iterated on our concepts and collaborated with developers to assess technical feasibility. This allowed us to refine the interaction flow of our prototype while ensuring that the design elements could be realistically implemented.

Results Our solution provides clients with an online survey to help map out which insurances suit their individual needs. We also created a dedicated insurance dictionary to clarify complex terms and support clients in understanding the material.

To make the experience less intimidating, we added visual elements that break up the text-heavy interface and present information more clearly. This allows new clients to explore topics at their own pace, giving them a solid foundation before speaking with a counselor.
